The Pun of Valentine’s Day

Font Size

Aren’t valentines supposed to be a little cheesy?  A play on words, a pun, that always brings a smile.

My favorite of course, is the one little Lisa gives to Ralph on The Simpsons “You choo choo choose me!” He reads with a big sigh of contentment.

My husband and I laugh at Nicolas Cage for some reason – so I have a whole slew put together to send to him for a fun laugh throughout the day.

On the web and I can easily find some classics.

And they all bring a smile to my face.  I love a good play on words.

So, this mom thought she had it all figured out when she went to the store and picked out Jurassic World valentines for Declan to give out during his classroom party.

I mean, c’mon – it’s a great big T-Rex saying “You’re T-RRIFIC!” or Blue saying, “I’d be BLUE without you!”  I was so excited to show Declan these cool valentines I had discovered.

Unfortunately, Declan did not enjoy the valentines as much as I did.  He just shook his head.  No.  He thought the sayings were too silly.

“They’ll laugh at me.”

“But they’re supposed to be a little funny!”

But Declan didn’t get the jokes.  So, we tried again.

I took him to the store and let him look at all the valentines to pick one pack out.

And again, he just shook his head.  No.

“I don’t want to give out valentines.”

I thought back to last year – when he didn’t want to give valentines of his beloved Spiderman.  Spiderman shooting a web saying something classic like, “Spiderman won’t rest until your Valentine’s Day is the best!”

To those, Declan turned his head in the same direction.  No.

“Declan,” I ventured as I had last year, “do you want me to make your valentines again this year?”

“Yes.”

So, we drove our cart over to the construction paper and bought a ream.  And we got set to crafting.

I’m guessing Declan doesn’t get the play on words.  I am guessing the puns and jokes go over his head.  Or maybe he gets the jokes, but just thinks they are really stupid.

To Declan, if you are giving out a Valentine’s Day card – they should say one thing.

Happy Valentine’s Day!

So, that is what we did.  Today is his party and although I am secretly excited to read some of the valentines he brings home – he is happy to participate.  Giving out valentines he is most comfortable with.  It’s a win!

  1. That’s a great card. No our son doesn’t get play on words, he takes them so literally. He just looks at me confused. The first thing he said this morning was – ‘it’s the worst day of the year, just a nightmare, all cos some people want to make some money’. I think he would rather have a love a dinosaur day…..

  2. I really like the cheesy card. We picked up some erasers and stickers for the class party but my son seemed not too interested. At the same time he looked forward to say “Happy valentine’s day”.Wishing you a very cheesy valentine’s day

  3. Puns are the best!!!! I saw an ad for a t-shirt the other day, printed on it was “IRONY. The opposite of wrinkly” and I almost bought it😂
Ben didn’t take cards today, although we have a bunch with his beloved Hello Kitty. His entire school is having a party and dance. I love his school! I’m looking forward to pictures from his teacher. We would love to go, but he still expects to leave with us if we go to his school. We had a big problem a while back with him refusing to ride the bus home, so we stick to schedule and hope for next year.
Happy Valentine’s Day to you! 💌💌💌💌

    1. Puns are the best – that is really all I get out of this day – some good laughs 🙂
His school does sound sooooo awesome! I am so glad he is there and hope he has an awesome time today! I remember that in the past – I would do the same.
Happy Valentine’s Day to you too!!

    1. At first I thought he really was upset the kids were going to laugh at him – and the protective parent started to emerge. Then I looked at it from an autism perspective and realized he just didn’t get the jokes on the cards so they weren’t funny to him. Silly me! 🙂

    1. Thank you! There are – but my daughter and I put them together. But he did sign his name so that is something!

  4. I think that’s cool that you did something Declan wanted because it’s really hard to pretend something is funny when you don’t think it is!
I like puns, but I can think of other situations, mainly with comedy, where I understand why other people think something is funny, but I really don’t! And I can’t fake it!
I hope you all had a good day. It’s not a tradition here to give out cards unless it’s to someone you’re attracted to (I did get my first one at school), but it sounds like a fun thing for the children to do.

    1. Thank you! I agree – we don’t do much Valentine’s Day either in our family. But the kids enjoy it in school, so that is good!
