The Beloved Returns

“Are you sure you do not want to go see Toy Story 4?”

“Yes.”

“Why don’t you want to see it?  You like Toy Story.”

Declan slouched in his chair and looked up.

“Because people laughed during the last one.”

“You didn’t like to hear people laughing at the funny parts?”

“The parts weren’t funny, and they were laughing,” Declan stated with a confused look on his face.

Hmmmm.  Maybe he didn’t get the jokes…..

“Okay then.  We’ll stay home while Daddy takes the others.”

Movies come, movies go.  Declan stays at home.

They’re too long, too dark, too loud.

When parts of the movie become too emotional – when the hero in the movie is faced with his darkest hour – Declan has been known to stand up and shout, “It’s time to go home.  I want to go home.  I want to go home now!”

And we scurry out of the theater to wait for the hero to soar again.

Knowing Declan’s issues with movies, I asked with great trepidation and wonder:

“Declan, do you want to see the new Spiderman movie?”

Spiderman.  Declan’s beloved.  His restricted interest for years.  His Halloween costume for the past five years.  His idle.  Would he want to see THIS movie?

“Yes.”

For the past week I have seen this guy walking around my house again – and I love it!  The costume is a little small these days, and torn in many places – but I love to see Spidey again 😊

And of course, what does Dad do but videotape Spidey jumping off our counter tops.  (Side note – I was on my treadmill directly below them when these two were at this stunt.  Almost fell off my treadmill in shock!)

We will be seeing the new Spiderman movie soon.  Hopefully Declan will have a great time and enjoy watching his beloved hero fly across the screen.  And hopefully Declan will not make any early exits 😉Fingers crossed!

    1. Oh good! I am excited to see it I think as much as he is, so that is good to know. My husband didn’t ask, or give my any warnings – he just came home and blurted out how Toy Story ended. That is sad! (The movie, not the no filter husband 🙂 ). I am still going to watch it when I can – and I guess now that I know I (hopefully) won’t tear up. I probably will though 🙂

      1. I loved Toy Story 4. I grudgingly went to the theater to beat the heat while on vacation and I wound up loving it more than everyone.

    1. They are. He wears noise canceling headphones and sometimes I am tempted to take them and use them myself 🙂 Haven’t yet 🙂

  1. Cool costume, and what a daring leap! We haven’t been to the cinema with Nathan yet, although they do hold ‘autism friendly’ screenings over here, when they keep the lights on and cut the ads etc. I hope Declan enjoys the Spiderman film. He certainly looks the part. 🙂

    1. Thank you! Well, we tried but he didn’t make it through. After an hour he wanted to move around and then he wanted to leave, so we went to the car and waited for the others to finish. We’ll see it when it comes to TV 🙂

  2. YAY! Spider-Man is back! I was wondering if he’d been retired for good.
We were talking about trying to take Ben to see Toy Story 4 but we’ve never braved a movie before. I’m not sure he’s capable of sitting still long enough. And I don’t know if I could handle an “autism friendly” viewing. I don’t do crowds and noise well. Thank goodness for streaming and dvds👍

    1. I LOVED seeing him in his Spiderman gear. Declan was fine with us donating a ton of toys this year but wanted to keep all of his Spiderman stuff. Every now and again I will see Spidey walk by – but this week I saw him a lot and was so happy 🙂
We went but didn’t make it through the movie. All of a sudden when we were leaving Declan remembered everything he hated about movies and didn’t want to go. We eventually got him there, but after an hour he was in the hall running up and down and then he just wanted to leave – so we spent the last 45 minutes of the movie in the car waiting for the others to finish. Hey, we tried. We will catch it when it comes to TV – you’re right. Thank goodness for those!

  3. We are off to see Spider-Man soon. He’s seen all the marvels and wants to keep his average up. He loved the last Spider-Man. Son does that with some movies as well. He did it with Toy Story as well. Doesn’t shout just whispers time to go and walks out. Hotel Transylvania was another. Alone was another. Hope you are ok.

    1. I hope you like it! I got to see the first half and thought it was really good. Then Declan was done, so we left and waited in the car for the others to finish. I don’t think he was upset with the movie, just didn’t want to be at the movies. We’ll catch it when it comes to TV.

    1. Thanks Elaine! I agree – the movies are too loud and with the previews anymore you are there forever! We ended up leaving early but I think we will both enjoy the movie more when it comes to our TV 🙂 🙂

  4. Aww I’m glad he’s donned his Spidey outfit again & is looking forward to the film! I used to love the cinema experience, but now I often find it too loud and too long to sit there so I think I’d rather watch it things at home other than for the odd special occasion. Fingers crossed Declan enjoys Spidey, he’s one of my favourites too! xx

    1. I agree – the movies are SO loud anymore. And the previews take another half an hour. Declan was happiest when we left which was about an hour early – which is fine, he was happy. And I think we will both enjoy seeing the movie at home on our TV when it comes out. Because Spidey is the best 🙂 xx
