It Never Fails

“What is this thing?” I thought looking at the lumpy rolled up paper towel with what appeared to be Declan’s name written on it.

I unrolled the wrap and saw the contents: My scissors, a pencil, note card, cotton swab and hair brush.

Interesting set.

“It’s my study kit,” Declan explained later when I asked him. “It is so I can study things in nature and take notes about my findings. I just need a magnifying glass now to complete my set.”

I made a mental note to order a magnifying glass and to cross my fingers, hoping it will arrive in time for Christmas.

Early the next morning, as I arose and ran down the stairs to move the elves before Declan awoke, I found a new Christmas list at the elves side.

I assumed Declan set it next to the elves so they could take his new list back when they “left” to do their nightly report with Santa.

Santa’s check in has been completed and the elves were relocated.

It never fails. Every year we face the last-minute gift request before the big day. We always try to wait until the last minute to buy Declan’s Christmas gifts to see what new fascination is going to pop up and demand focus. These are always the gifts we weren’t prepared for, and we end up spending a ton on shipping to get the obscure gifts here on time.

Since Declan asked for the art kit when he met with Santa, Santa knew about that one, and Declan will have one on Christmas. Santa now knows about the magnifying glass, so that one will be covered too.

But a PC? A new personal computer for Declan to use to make his own gaming videos, or whatever else he has planned in his unique brain?

I have to admit โ€“ that request cracked me up.

I love that Declan has such high hopes in Santa.  But a PC is not going to happen.

Time to get creative.

I’m thinking Santa will leave a note at some point thanking Declan for being such a good boy this year. Letting Declan know how special he is to Santa. And that Santa chose an extraordinary gift for Declan instead of a PC.

I think Declan will accept that.

Every day I watch Declan get involved in some new project, so I know there is still a chance I will find another note next to the elves. I love his creativity and focus when he is into something, so I don’t mind. I enjoy his notes – they make me smile.

Especially the notes where he asks Santa for a new PC.

    1. Not yet. I think the Easter bunny is out – what large bunny goes door to door to give out presents? The tooth fairy is still in (even though I stink at it) and we still have Santa. It makes the holiday a little more fun. The time is coming. It’s just not here yet.

      1. My kids were afraid of the easter bunny. The thought of that weirdo creeping around the house at night freaked them out. We always had to do egg hunts outside. Freezing.

  1. Ben asks for impossible things like a “Sweeney Todd barber chair” complete with a basement to slide the victims into๐Ÿคฆ๐Ÿผโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿ™„
I lucked out months ago and saw an old school Jumanji game and bought that. And I think there are some other treasures under the new clothes in my closet stash. I don’t remember anymore what all is in there๐Ÿ™Š๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚ I’ll find out in a few days๐Ÿคท๐Ÿผโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿ˜‰๐Ÿค—๐Ÿฅฐ

I’m happy to welcome Declan to the Sciencey People Club ๐Ÿ˜˜๐Ÿ’•

    1. He would be happy to join! Especially if he gets to use his magnifying glass. He cracks me up with some of his requests. From making costumes for Halloween to a study kit. He gets his mind set and has a plan!

  2. That’s so funny, Robyn! It really made me laugh because we have that in our house too, the last minute gift request. We had it this year too, but luckily nothing as big as a PC! I hope you all have a lovely Christmas, and all the best for a brighter 2021. ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. Oooooo – that is a tough one. I get reminded all the time with notes to Santa and now I realize how thankful I am! Fingers crossed you got it right!

  3. I had to laugh at the PC request. At least you know whatโ€™s on his mind! Iโ€™ll be curious to see what you end up getting in lieu of a PC! Good luck with the final days till Christmas.

  4. Arenโ€™t these kids so creative and great at keeping us on our toes? I know this is an older post but I wanted to tell you how impressed I am with your creative ways of keeping up with your son.
