A Fun History Lesson

“Rutherford Hayes.”

My jaw was already dropped.  My head sunk even farther in disbelief.

I looked over at my husband and saw his expression mimicked mine.

“Hold on a sec,” he said, “Even I am going to need to look them up from now on.”

Declan was naming the Presidents of the United States.  In order.

And I must admit, my memory only got me through the first seven.  My husband made it to nineteen before he threw in the flag and pulled out the iPad for reference.

I should have known something was up.  Declan started asking me last week who my favorite president was.  And after much discussion on the President’s, we both decided our favorite was George Washington.

Sitting in our living room, listening to Declan patiently tell us the order of the Presidents, I started to realize Declan has a new interest.  The Presidents.

“The twenty-fourth president was Grover Cleveland again.”

My husband and I just started giggling.  What an amazing mind Declan has!

Just a fun Friday story of Declan, who continues to amaze us.

I also wanted to share that after such a great discussion we had here about when to disclose to others about an autism diagnosis on my post, “Do I Have to Explain?” I decided to submit the post to The Mighty and it was published a couple of days ago.

Retitled, of course (titles being my absolute weakness), but can be found over on the right, or right here: When I Realized I Don’t Always Need to Explain My Son’s Autism

Check it out if you get a chance!

Happy Friday!

  1. Love it! And there are lots of stories, books, movies about Presidents for DecIan to indulge his interests….looks like some new found history lessons for you guys!! 🙂

    1. My husband loves history. We make special trips to battlefields all the time. I can’t say the kids and I have had the best fun on these trips, but we try to make him happy with presence and attention. It’ll be great if Declan shares in this love of history and battlefields with him! For all of us 🙂

  2. That will help a lot in history class… even topics that have nothing to do with presidents because each term is kind of an era…

    1. We were so surprised – so fun to listen to him name them like that! That is so cool about your granddaughter! 🙂

  3. Oh that’s so sweet, I love that your son is learning so much, if he likes the president feed his curiosity to the max because that will help him a ton, I am happy for you

  4. We were riding in the car with a neighbor and, off-handed, I asked him, “What is the capital of Madagascar?” Unfortunately, he did NOT know the capital of Zambia. 😉
