It has been so long since I have been able to participate in WWW Wednesday – I definitely want to jump in this week and talk books!

The Three W’s for WWW Wednesday are:

What are you currently reading?
What did you recently finish reading?
What do you think you’ll read next?

What are you currently reading?

Currently, I am reading The Great Believers by Rebecca Makkai.  Can’t say I knew much about it going in – it just had that fancy National Book Award Finalist do-hickeys in the corner that I like and will pretty much read any of those, contents unknown.  So far, so good!  Keep you posted!

What did you recently finish reading?

So, this is why I like WWW Wednesday – I get to see what everyone else is reading – the good, the bad and the ugly and can tailor my TBR around everyone else’s reviews.  Which is how I came across Illuminae by, Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff.  I can honestly say that I do not think I have ever read a book like this.  I don’t mean that I have never read a post-apocalyptical, set in space, love story (Come to think of it, I haven’t) BUT I mean the book itself is written uniquely.  When I first got this big bad boy I was a little intimidated.  But then I realized whole pages told the story in a unique format.  Very unique.  Very enjoyable.  Excited to pick up the next in the series when I can get my hands on it.

Before that I read A Darker Shade of Magic by VE Schwab, another book/series that I learned about here on WWW Wednesday.  And another book that did not disappoint.  I was concerned the characters and the multitude of different people/settings were going to be confusing.  They weren’t and I really enjoyed this book.  This is the kind of book my best friend loves, and shhh, don’t tell her – I got her the box set for Christmas.  I’m excited to read the next one, just have to wait to get my hands on it.  MAYBE I’ll just wait for after Christmas 😊

Before that I read Conversations about Autism: Real Life Experiences about Struggle, Acceptance and Hope by fellow blogger, now author, Debbie Frick.  I really enjoyed this book and could relate to so many parental accounts from other parents whose children were autistic.  You can read my full review, here.  Great book!

When I last left WWW the big question I was pondering was, what book am I going to pick up next?  I decided to go with In the Shadow of the Banyan by, Vaddey Ratnar.

Then the worst thing happened.  Life.  The times I would normally spend reading, I spent running errands, running kids around – I don’t know, EVERYTHING ELSE but reading.  So, instead of reading my book, I ended up having to start this book over and over again.  Which didn’t fair well for my attitude towards the book.  Instead of accepting my inability to read, I got really mad at the book.  “What is happening, again?  I’m so lost.”  Which is really a shame.  Because when I finally sat down and was able to dedicate time to reading, this book was really good.  Set in Cambodia during the time of civil war in the 1970’s we follow our young heroine through the war.  Well written, very moving, enjoyable read.

What do you think you’ll read next?

Not sure!  Hopefully I can get my hands on one of those books next in the series I’ve enjoyed.  If not, maybe I will find another great recommendation out there on WWW Wednesday.  Or, I could just pick up a book in one of my “To Read” piles around the house.  Always fun to choose!

Thanks again, Sam for hosting WWW Wednesday!

  1. Currently reading a book on cosmology. Previously reading a book so bad that I stopped after three chapters. Planning on reading another stupid Jack Reacher novel…

    1. It takes A LOT for me to drop the book. I so want credit for reading it even if I have to barrel through. Really should just drop the book. You love Jack Reacher’s books – it’ll be good, I’m sure!

  2. Ooooh, hang on to your seat – Illunimae!!! Yes! I also found it though recommendations on WWW. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

  3. Oh I feel you with life getting in the way!! I have felt like that is picking up pace week by week since early October!! Fingers crossed you get some decent reading time soon x

  4. 1) ADSOM is awesome and I’m excited you’re enjoying it!
    2) Illuminae is AMAZING and you need to know that the audiobook is ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE!!! I maintain it is the best audiobook ever, AND it actually works really well if you want to listen to the audio while reading along in the book. Or just listen to it by itself. In the car. On the way to work. And start crying from feels. Just…so good.

    1. I’m going to out myself here – I have never listened to an audiobook. In the car I don’t even listen to music half the time – I just enjoy the silence. I am starting to see all the hours I could be filling with books……If I do breakthrough, you’ve sold me on the Illuminae series, for sure!

  5. Illuminae sounds right up my alley. Will check it out. Although I’m hesitant to dive into another massive book. Slogging my way through one now. And I’m a slow reader.

    1. It’s a good book and easy to read. I think it is 609 pages but the book is kind of like World War Z in its set up. The book is supposed to be one huge file telling what happened in a series of interviews, transcripts, text messages. There are even pages that are just one sentence long, but written out like art depicting the action in the sentence. It’s very unique. And it turned out to be a book that I read way past my bedtime because I was so into it. Took me four days (and I only read for an hour a day – except for the bedtime day).

    1. I didn’t know about it until WWW Wednesday and I saw a couple of other people reading (and raving) about it. It was good! I would read the rest of the series, for sure.

  6. Another great crop of books, Robyn, and it’s got me wishing I could read more widely if I wasn’t tied to intensive course material. Nice to see Debbie Frick’s excellent book appearing again. I’m looking forward to getting stuck into that during any lull I get in studying. I like the look of ‘A Darker Shade of Magic’ too! Looks intriguing! 😀

    1. Thanks Alli! If you like fiction I think you would like A Darker Shade of Magic – really is a good one and I am excited to get to the next in the series. Good luck to you in your studies! 🙂

      1. Thanks Robyn – I need it this year! The book sounds great to me – I love a bit of magic! 🙂
