Unplugged

When I was in high school, MTV began the show “Unplugged.” A show where music artists would perform their songs acoustically in front of a live audience.  This seemed to be when MTV was starting to play a little less music and began a few of their reality TV shows. I can’t say I watched a lot of Unplugged.  The only one I remember watching was Nirvana, and to be honest, I can’t remember if I watched it before, or as a rerun after, Kurt Cobain’s death.  I DID watch a lot of MTV’s reality TV shows, The Real World especially.  This was at a time when if you couldn’t be there to watch your show, you (somehow) figured out how to program your VCR to tape the show while you were out. For about three years, I do not think I missed a single Real World episode.

I thought of Unplugged today when I tried to think of a word to describe my recent hiatus from the internet.  I was unplugged.  Disconnected.  I took a step back from the online world.  I don’t have social media or WordPress on my phone (a choice I made a few years ago and have come to really appreciate), so unless I had my computer on, I was “out of the know.”

Being unplugged wasn’t necessarily a choice I made on purpose. Like Spring Breaks of yore, we traveled to the shore. (Maybe there is a bit of a poet in me, eh?).

The house we rented DID have WiFi that worked – as long as you were ten feet from the modem, the modem was not too cold, there was no wind outside, and you were wearing a yellow bucket hat.  Just kidding about the hat, but not much else.  And since I had such difficulty getting or waiting for my computer to work, I eventually stopped trying.  I began a computer-free life.

It was great.

We walked, while Declan scootered, a million miles a day.  I become a zombie whenever a puzzle comes out and ended up finishing three puzzles – each the day I started them.  We played on the sand.  We played the board game Clue every night.  But most of all, I was able to sit and listen to the sound that I love most.

The sound of the ocean waves breaking on the shore.

I enjoyed my very own Real REAL World.

We rented the house for our Spring Break 2020 getaway.  Even with the pandemic, travel restrictions, and the quarantine, the owner would not let us out of the lease last year.  He did let us carry our trip over to 2021, which worked great. I am excited to continue our Spring Break tradition in the years to come.

On our Spring Break trip five years ago, I took the picture at the top of my blog.  I asked the family to face the water and put their hands out to their sides, not quite touching each other.  I asked them to turn around and do the same thing again, facing me.

As they turned and before they complied, I captured Catelyn – always the actress – performing the BIG part on an imaginary stage.  I caught Bobby trying to comply to my request and coerce his siblings to do the same.  Declan enjoyed the turnaround so much; he added a twist and continued a stimful turn.  While Bob, who is so easily distracted by his surroundings, looks in earnest off to the side at who knows what.

It was an accidental shot.

It was a perfect representation of my family.

When I started and set up my blog five years ago (!) I couldn’t think of a better photo to use.  I still love that Spring Break photo and don’t think it will ever change.  Although at this point, it is a little inaccurate in age.

So, just to be fair, the 2021 Coupe kids on our 2021 Spring Break:

  1. OMG! Cate! And Bobby, and little Declan 😲 I’ve seen pictures but… they’ve all grown so much this year!! The “big kids” really are big now😥
    Ben grew too😔 hello puberty😱

I’m so glad you were unplugged. What a fabulous way to spend a week!🌊💃🏼🌠🥳
I was hoping it was something good. I was just thinking about you last night… We all worry more this past year, don’t we?

D did okay without the internet? Ben freaks when it goes out.

    1. Declan has way more patience than I. He stood right next to the modem to get his You Tube (and then tried to jump on the nice couch as we couldn’t pack his trampoline). We had to make a makeshift jumping space – but hey – whatever it takes!!

  2. I agree, your blog banner is one of the best out there. It’s fun to hear the backstory. I’m really starting to miss the beach. We haven’t been in a few years. This year’s vacation is to Maine, and there’s technically a beach but the water is freezing and the sand is mostly rock. Maybe we’ll try to squeeze in a weekend in Delaware somewhere along the way.

    1. My parents used to have a beach house right on the bay in Delaware. That is where this trip started. I would take the kids down to there for Spring Break until my parents sold their house. I loved that break so we kept it up but go to Jersey now. We had Maine on our outlook for a vacation as well. Arcadia National Park looks amazing. I think this year – if we do a summer one – we are looking at the Finger Lakes in NY. We’ll see. After last year this one break was all I needed.

      1. Acadia is really pretty. We plan to bike there a lot on this vacation. Bar Harbor is really cool too. Looking forward to it. Hopefully we won’t need a vaccine passport to get up there. Eli won’t be 16 yet.

        1. Oh yeah, that’s right. Some friends of ours went over the summer last year and they had to bring their negative COVID results to get into their hotel or rental place. I don’t know what travel restrictions are out there anymore or what they are. Hopefully you guys will have no issues. And if we ever make it, I will add Bar Harbor to my list of places to visit.

  3. Your well-deserved family vacation looked and sounded so wonderful! How amazing it was to truly unplug from the world and get lost in the beach, puzzles and family time. That’s what I miss most about camping and vacation these days – the escape from our devices and the online world.

Your kids have really grown up! Your eldest is really tall now and Catelyn and Declan are looking like tweens. 🙂

Kids will never understand or know how cool The Real World was and MTV at its heyday – and when we have to program the VCR and hoped it recorded properly!

    1. Thank you! It really was nice to get away from our routine and for me to just put the computer away. I can’t believe how much time I spend online on a regular day! It was a nice change of pace.
Oh my gosh, I know! You could ask a family member to press the record button, but you always ran the risk of them forgetting. And programming was so hard! MTV then started running the marathons, or reruns 12 hours later – so if the unthinkable happened, you at least only had to wait a little bit to catch up. The kids will never know our pain! 🙂

  4. I go “unplugged” often! The real world is so much better than being online! 😊 I’m happy you got some IRL time. It’s so important to stick to what truly matters ❤️ That photo of your family is beautiful 🙂

(PS: My favorite MTV Unplugged is Alanis Morissette 😁)

    1. I would totally watch Alanis – I bet she is good unplugged!
I need to go unplugged more often. It was nice to just BE. You are so right!

  5. It’s nice that you can unplug for a week and just enjoy the “real” world for a while. I love the picture at the top of the page too. So much personality!

I also love your explanation of the Wi-Fi. I live in a dead zone as far as cell phone signals go. I tell people, who are old enough to remember, that I feel like Oliver on “Green Acres” – I have to climb a telephone pole and hold my mouth just right in order to get any signal at all. And, I have Wi-Fi through my land line phone and it’s crap too. So, I totally understand. Some days, I have to give up and walk away to keep my sanity.

    1. Totally! If I sat there long enough my computer would kick on and then go sooooo slooooow that it was driving me crazy. I found I enjoyed myself so much more by just doing other things. It really was an eye opener!

  6. Two handsome young men and a beautiful daughter with a teenager’s leash in her hand (a cell phone). I agree with a blogger above. Your cover picture is just perfect for your blog!!!

  7. Oh, how wonderful to know the story behind that picture! It is perfect! They are perfect. Then, and now too. As always you had me laughing out loud here and also warming my heart. “Like spring breaks of yore, we travelled to the shore.” Genius! 😂

    1. Hahaha! Thank you! I have seen some poetry challenges out there and I am just so bad at poetry that I have never engaged. Every now and again a rhyme just pops out! 🙂

  8. It sounds like you had a lovely holiday. I also love the sound of the ocean. I can’t wait until I can go on a seaside break again. And, the picture at the top of your post is fantastic – great capture 🙂
