ghosts holding a carved pumpkin

“This is Halloween, this is Halloween!”

With a large smile of excitement, Declan did his early morning stretch looking out the front window.

His arms dropped to his sides and his mouthed gaped open.

“Oh my GOSH, Mom! Look!!”

I stepped up to the window to look outside. And smiled.

“Oh my gosh, look at that! I wonder who put that there?”

Declan turned and looked at me with horror and then amazement. Then he ran outside to get a closer look.

It appears someone was having a bit of fun. And tied a red balloon to the sewer grate located right in front of our house.

“Do you think Pennywise did that?” Declan asked in fear.

I shrugged to allow the idea sink in a little for fun.

“Maybe,” I answered.

“Well, I am not going near that today. AT ALL!”

And back inside we went.

The morning started with the song from A Nightmare Before Christmas. Declan and I took turns singing to each other:

“This is Halloween, this is Halloween
Pumpkins scream in the dead of night
This is Halloween, everybody make a scene
Trick or treat ’til the neighbors die of fright”

Declan’s favorite day has finally arrived after a month celebrating his favorite season. The season of fright.

I feel like this month should have really been renamed “Craftober” because Declan has kept me very busy creating new arts and crafts projects.

We started his Halloween costume early. Declan has chosen to go as a very obscure creature, Cartoon Cat:

A mask we made of paper mache.

Feeling so inspired, Declan decided to continue our paper mache skills and had us create a Jack Skellington mask:

We realized how big this new mask was when it was finally finished. Declan wanted to look at himself in the bathroom mirror but got stuck in the doorway. I finagled him out and walked him to the hall mirror so he could get a good look at himself.

After telling Declan I would not buy him a $20 Bendy and the Ink Machine plush, he convinced me to make him one. A YouTube video made it look easy. Two black socks, some felt and some stuffing was all you needed.

The YouTube video was 3 minutes long. The actual making of this plush was about 24 hours.

Bendy is another murderous little video game character, with 1930’s animation and music, which Declan is drawn to.
After 24 hours of working on this thing I think next time I would just spend the $20 to buy one.

We’ve reached the actual day – it’s Halloween! Our town left it up to the residents to decide if they are going to participate or not in the holiday – just wear a mask if you do.

Declan will walk up and down the street in his costumes, showing the neighbors his gear. Heck, I may wear Jack while he wears Cartoon Cat if is easier.

Catelyn is having a friend over whose parents do not want her to go out trick or treating. They will just watch scary movies and eat sugary snacks, while Bobby will get dropped off at his friends to trick or treat and then do the same. I will leave candy in a bowl on a table at the end of our driveway for each person to take a piece (or more). It’s just a different kind of Halloween this year!

As I sit here and write this I am reminded of the fun of the Halloween season. I look left and see:

Jack on his perch

And then I look right and see:

The Pennywise balloon floating eerily above the grate.

We weren’t sure what to expect this particular Halloween season, so we made our own fun. And a lot of fun it was!

Happy Halloween!

  1. Fantastic Halloween post, Robyn! We’re doing that too – making our own fun. As I explained to Maddie earlier, who has finally realised that she’s a bit old for trick or treating now, we’ll always celebrate, just in different ways. There’s always room for Halloween fun, however you mark it. Have a great day. 🙂

    1. Thank you, Alli! We had the same talk. There are a ton of different ways to celebrate even if it isn’t what we are used to. We are still going to enjoy it! You too! 🙂

  2. I am so glad Declan gets his Halloween this year. That Pennywise balloon looks ominous. Love his costume and the creative crafts you worked on. And hope you have a good visit with Catelyn’s friend. Happy Halloween!!!

  3. The Pennywise balloon is pretty creepy!

It’s great you’ve been crafting so much. Declan models Mr Skellington perfectly – that is one incredible make!!

    HaPpY hAlLoWeEeEeN! xx

    1. I know! It made his day 🙂 When I drove around, I saw someone put them throughout the neighborhood. What a clever idea to brink on the spooky! I know Declan loved it. Thank you! Happy Halloween! xx

  4. Wow! Your Arts & Crafts beats mine. We are not mentioning the day☹ Daughter had some tears since she might love it more than Declan, but we discussed and since Ben doesn’t realize… we are abstaining. We had to walk to another neighborhood to trick or treat anyway, and we rarely got anyone at our house…

I’m glad you guys were able to find a way for Declan to still enjoy it! Ben got to wear his costume to school on Tuesday and hasn’t wanted to put it on since.🤷🏼‍♀️🎃

You need Ben’s Jack Skellington onesie pajamas 😉💕

    1. I thought about you when I made that Bendy plushie. Because it just “wasn’t right” a few times and I was asked to start different parts over. Patience, patience, patience – I called on all I could muster to do it again calmly!
Those pajamas would be good. The reason Declan doesn’t want to dress in that mask is that he really likes his Cartoon Cat, but without the suit, the Jack costume is not complete and should not be worn. I like it, so it will make some sort of showing! 🙂

  5. Typical halloween here, we created a bloody murder scene in the driveway, torched a couple of pumpkins with kerosene and froze by butt off passing out candy. Not many kids this year so we have a big bowl of chocolate left !!! Those paper mache projects are quite impressive.

    1. Declan was our only trick or treater. When I walked him around I was surprised at how few kids were out. Thanks! The masks were actually fun to make.

  6. It’s great that Declan got to enjoy his day with the help of a simple read balloon and your not so simple crafts. We had very few trick or treaters visit the table set on our driveway. I made a special bags with candy and a small can of play dough for the two kids down the street and made sure they got the bag off the porch. Their mom sent pics last night and early this morning. The play dough, apparently, was a big hit. On to new traditions for Thanksgiving!!??

    1. Yes, he really enjoyed visiting the craft store, Michael’s to decorate our house for Halloween with little crafts he could color and paint. We are headed there tonight after school so he can pick out some Thanksgiving ones to help soften the blow of Halloween being over.

  7. We had a similar experience sewing Creeper dolls for two nephews years ago. After our 24 hours, we decided to buy the plush next time. 😀 I say that your crafts look great!
