The Ultimate Guide to Autism Therapies and Solutions

Whether you are just starting out, or thinking about adding or changing therapies, here is a great guide from Autism Parenting Magazine about different autism therapies.

In our house, we are using  many of these therapies, interventions and strategies for both Catelyn and Declan.  In fact, we are preparing Declan for another trip to the dentist, which always involves a social story and script  – just so he knows and is prepared for what will happen during his appointment.  They work great for Declan!

If you click on the infographic, you will be taken to Autism Parenting Magazine’s blog where you can find more information about these therapies and interventions.  Check it out!

  1. You got him successfully through his first dentist appointment, so unless there is something happening NEW this time, just run him through the same script you used last time. Remind him how much fun he had last time! Hope you are using the same dentist this time, or you will have to make a whole new script and work him through it.

    1. You are right – a lot of what we are doing is a reminder – same dentist, same routine – so that’s good!

  2. Thank you so much for sharing. I will definitely check it out. My daughter’s first dental visit was horrific for her. We are still trying to find a better dentist.

    1. The dentist was hard at first! I didn’t even take Declan until he was 4. And in that visit he just sat in the corner and screamed. The dentist was great though – he said “I’m not going to get any closer to upset him anymore. Thankfully his mouth is wide open when he is screaming and from here, I don’t see any glaring issues. So we will leave it at that and I will see him again in 6 months.” Took another year before Declan was willing to sit in the chair – and any work done has to be done with him asleep – but we were able to have a second visit because the dentist was so willing to work with Declan’s limits that first visit. Hope you find one that works better for Chloe!

      1. It’s great to find a professional who can meet different needs. But of course the hard work you’ve done at home – from preparing and script-writing for this visit specifically, to the broader work you’ve done socially – is a huge contributor. Declan sounds like a really good kid, probably in part because his Mom is so great. Not to take anything away from him of course, but his successes are yours, and the result of a lot of hard work.
