Summer Fun in Photos!

Three teenage boys stood around Declan with small smiles on their faces.

“Do you want to see what I look like if I were a shark killing a seal?”

“Umm, sure,” one boy replied.

Declan put his head in the water so his orange fin stood high on his back.  Then he jumped up, bringing his head high, mouth open, swinging from side to side.

He landed on his feet, brought his head back into the water shaking an imaginary seal violently back and forth.

He stood up straight, fake chewing and looked at the boys.

“Wow, you really did look like a shark eating a seal,” one boy smiled and nodded

And before the boys took off to play in the deep end, I smiled and thanked them.

With Declan away at camp something remarkable happened.

I know where my phone is.  ALL THE TIME.  It stays charged.  There aren’t any macaroni and cheese spills on the screen.

Having my phone to myself, I began to look through it and found some pictures I took of Declan and they really made me smile.

The shark fin is the newest member to Declan’s pool toys.  It does not disappoint as he can spend a lot of time seeking out swimmers to scare.

And he doesn’t care what you say – you really do think he is a real shark when he swims by 😊

You might need to be a SpongeBob fan to get this one.  But for a couple of weeks Declan interest laid in one character.

He decided to become “The Hash Slinging Slasher.”  A ghost made up by Squidward in the “Graveyard Shift” episode to scare SpongeBob.

He played it to the “T” by flickering our lights and calling and hanging up on his siblings.  It was pretty funny, I must say.

One week was spent at a Vacation Bible School at my parent’s church.  The biggest shocker for me was that Declan was upset if we were running late in the morning.  He loved the music, he loved the Bible stories and everyday he told me the message he learned.  Great experience!

Declan also celebrated a big birthday, turning 8 years old.  He had presents, cake and pancakes (because it was George Washington’s favorite food, of course!).  Although we didn’t do much on his actual birthday, he had a lot of fun with his new presents and said the day was “epic.”

Doesn’t get better than that!

For his birthday, I put all of his pictures through the years into one photo.

When he saw it, he was amazed and shouted, “Oh my gosh!  Look!  It’s MY EVOLUTION!”

I think I am going to have to make one every year now after a reaction like that 😊

And right before he left I took Declan for a fun day at the aquarium seeing all the animals and even bravely walking across the shark net.

I am missing my Declan now as he is away at camp, but had a lot of fun actually using my phone to look at all his fun pictures 😊

    1. Thank you, Elaine! Kind of! His mattress is right next to me – so I find myself looking at it looking for him. But he is not waking me up at the crack of dawn to let me know “the sun is up so it is time for US to get up!” So that definitely equals more sleep 🙂

  1. They grow so fast…or should I say they EVOLVE so fast?!😂👏 He’s such a character.
Ben’s birthday is 9/2 so Labor Day weekend…we don’t usually do much. Make his favorite grilled chicken (he calls is “fire chicken” since its cooked on the fire) and presents. He doesn’t like cake or ice cream. Very low key.
We try to get them to do something at school for him, that’s been hit and miss.

How nice to have your phone all to yourself! By the time you *really* relax, camp will be over😂 Next year you’ll just “shoo” like the other moms👍💌

    1. I know! He cracked me up with that 🙂 He told me I should make an evolution for Bobby now too 🙂 I wasn’t sure what Declan wanted to do for his birthday but he was pretty content just staying here and putting his President puzzle in order 🙂 My phone – oh my gosh – it’s mine, it’s really mine! I get texts THE MOMENT THEY COME IN and not the next day when I am used to seeing them (briefly). I will hopefully figure this out soon – and you’re right – I will totally “shoo” myself next year! 🙂

    1. Never! Actually he is still holding strong to becoming the next President. He feels that when he turns 35 “It will be MY turn.” Although not so sure I want that job for him either

  2. Happy Birthday to Declan. These are precious memories that will remain a lifetime. Enjoy each step and day as we see victories along the way. 🙂

    1. That’s definitely a good point – the days can be long but the years are short – so, so short!

  3. Talking of sleep I’ve been looking at weighted blankets and I read that they are good for autistic children, have you heard of them?

    1. Yes – Declan has one that my mom was kind enough to make for him. It definitely helps him and he asks for it. My mom made one for herself too – she feels it is helpful too. It’s tough because they can be expensive and you don’t want to invest in something if it is not going to work. But I am seeing them more often in stores so hopefully that will drive the price down. I wrote more about them here – and there is a link for more information about them – hope it helps!: https://www.autismfamilypower.com/weighted-blankets-reducing-anxiety-and-providing-a-good-nights-sleep/

      1. I’ve seen them on the Amazon site, I bought a cooling one but I have struggled with it because it’s so heavy! The cooling worked great, my husband hates it so I trimmed it just to go on my side. I may try it again when the scar on my chest feels better. At the moment the blanket feels like a slab of concrete! 😉
