Feeling the Excitement

I walked into the dining room, headed to my computer and stopped short.

I took two steps back, reached around the door frame, and grabbed my phone from its charger in the kitchen. I needed to take a photo.

My seat was taken. It has never been taken before.

What was she doing? Her expression never changed. Mild mannered, sitting in my seat.

Did I turn into a dog?

As I came closer, I realized what she was patiently waiting for.

Her treat that was placed there the night before when she went to bed. The day was anew, and she was ready for her treat.

Penny the Pug was not the only excited little creature in this house today. Yesterday, the elves returned to our house, bringing with them all the Christmas spirit.

We do not have just one Elf on the Shelf. Last year, Declan wanted an entire elf family.

Of course, he did! And so now we have three elves and two pets. This morning they left their first perch in the basement and showed up in our Christmas Stockings, or as Catelyn calls them, our “elf bags.”

Declan was very apologetic my elf bag was without an elf. I assured him I was okay.

This morning something new occurred with the elves. With shaking hands, Declan ran into my room with a piece of paper clutched in his hands.

“They wrote back!”

Confused why the elves chose the basement their first night, Declan wrote them a note asking why they chose the basement. (Truthfully, “they” chose the basement because Declan was upstairs in the kitchen, and I needed a place to put them without Declan seeing me!).

But the elves wrote back, making Declan’s day.

Why are you downstairs? Because that’s where most of our magic comes from. (Thanks to Catelyn for replying!)

We have felt a sudden shift in the house. No longer is Declan completely focused on Cartoon Network, and it’s various shows through the years, drawing all the different characters.

The Elf of the Shelf has come to town and taken over. Drawings, movies, videos are all centered around Declan’s returning friends and their new form of communication.

And even though Declan breathlessly squeaked out, “the elves are watching you,” when Bobby pinned him to the ground in a sudden wrestling move, Declan sees them more as friends, not tattling little foes.

I can only hope a daily note isn’t required along with remembering to move five different creatures. That may be a bit more than I can take. In the meantime, we will begin to celebrate the fun of the Christmas season!

  1. This post made me check the date REAL quick!πŸ˜‚ Ours arrive December 1st, I thought I’d missed the boat there for a second!

I honestly stared at the first picture for a whole minute and saw nothing until you supersized it πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

    1. Declan has been reminding me about the elves (“Only 3 more days!” “Only 2 more days!”), otherwise, I would have forgotten too!
I know! She was so small in the chair. And because I wanted a photo, I was sure she was going to leave before I could get it. But she was patiently going to wait until she got her bone back. Cracked me up!

  2. I love the spirit of Christmas coming into your house! And I love how into Christmas your family is and that everyone helps Declan enjoy the magic of the Elves on the shelf.

And that look on Penny the Pug’s face is just hilarious. I had quite the chuckle. Looks like everyone got a nice treat!

    1. Thank you! I must say, it is so much better with the big kids helping. I was putting laundry away last night while D listened to his videos and I just texted Catelyn, “Move the elves. Write a note, Pleaaasssseee πŸ™‚ ” I think she likes to do “be in on the secret” too!
Oh, she cracked me up. Such a serious pug face! Made me laugh to see her taking over my chair in patient anticipation!

  3. Penny the Pug is awesome!! I saw the treat and knew that’s what she was after. She’s a good girl!! Zeus would’ve been ON the table, and not even a guilty look when he got caught.

Yay for Cate! Yeah, it’s probably really fun for her to be one of those in on the secret now. Hopefully the excitement doesn’t wear off and she continues to help move them.

I’m SOOO glad Ben doesn’t know about the Elf. I don’t think he’d “get it” anyway.πŸ€·πŸΌβ€β™€οΈ He sees the lights when we take Daughter to work at night, so he’s been telling me to get dressed and go to the store… I guess we need to pull out the Christmas box and see if any of our lights survived. πŸ˜‚πŸ’•

    1. Molly would have done the same thing as Zeus – I can’t tell you how much food she has taken off of the counters and table. Someone lost all their birthday cupcakes one year because of her big lab appetite. Penny’s face was just so serious. I guess she wanted to be sure she got my attention and chose my chair. She got my attention! And her bone.
I had to do the same – plug in a bunch of strands of lights and hoped some made it through. We are the worst undecorators. Just grab and put it in a bin. Worry about it next year. Then next year we spend hours untangling and plugging. You would think we would have learned our lesson by now, but nah! πŸ™‚

    1. Haha! I know – she cracked me up with that one. I am so glad she forgot the word “Stockings” for a second. Because they are now, and forever will be, elf bags! πŸ™‚

  4. That’s cute that he likes the elves. I’m not a fan because that would’ve terrified me as a child. πŸ˜€ Maybe you can always move them in a cluster.

    1. I am thankful for the help that I get but last night, only three moved – but hey, that’s still something!

  5. Ugh. You’ve brought back memories of staying up super late on Christmas eve because the kids wouldn’t settle down to sleep so I could fill the stockings and drink the Guinness we left for Santa. As they get older, it all gets harder. I fear the note will now be an expectation.

    1. The note happened again last night. I think since it will probably be a new thing we should set another new precedence – have it take a couple of days to get an answer.

  6. I was raised in a non-religious family. They taught me that the main thing was to respect others. My children have been raised the same way. Our celebration of Christmas is not because of what it represents religiously, but because of what it represents to those we love and that if they believe it. I hope you enjoy a lot with your family on those dates.

  7. Christmas magic – love it! I think I have as much fun with the elf as my kiddos! Well, that is, until I fall asleep and forget to move her….but right now it’s fun and exciting – we need a little bit of that in 2020!
