Don’t Judgey the Pudgy!

Hydrogenated oils.

Monosodium Glutamate.

Those were the first thoughts that popped into my mind while I was eating cheese puffs.

It was just air.  Crunchy air.  There was nothing natural about the orange on my fingertips or the texture of the object in my hand.  The puff was what I imagined these chemicals looked like in object form.  I could be way wrong.  All I know is that it was probably terrible for me and I was eating it.

That is not like me.  I’m not even a big snacker!

I have always had food rules.  I was a vegetarian for years.  I even went vegan for a few months.  Now that I eat meat again, I only eat chicken, turkey, or fish.

Throughout the years, I have developed food allergies.  Dairy especially causes my face to swell, eye bags to form, and I can’t breathe out of my nose.  Oatmeal, soy, gluten are also offenders.  I don’t feel as bad when I eat them I just get very bloated with an upset stomach.  Any food coated in preservatives, like Dorito’s, will cause the same reaction as if I ate a whole piece of cheese.  Goodbye breathing, hello puffy face.

So, why am I eating the crap?

When I was first locked in the house, I said goodbye to all my old food rules.  There were no rules.  If I was going to have to stay home, I was going to enjoy my time inside.

At the time I blew caution to the wind, I was also under the thought we were only going to be doing this for two weeks.  Then a month.  How much damage could I possibly do in that short amount of time?  I’m still taking my gym class every day and running 4-5 days a week.  We walk miles every day.  One cheese puff, one puffy face – who cares?

In this house of picky eaters, I still have to make 3-4 different meals a night.  To make things easier, I jump into the main course.  I’ve eaten the meatballs when I usually wouldn’t have.  I’ll eat a turkey burger when it’s hot dog/hamburger night, but I’ll put it on a great big (yummy) regular roll.  I don’t even do that at restaurants!

It’s more accessible too.  There is one store farther away that has the best dairy-free/gluten-free section.  But it isn’t as close and is a little crazier.  I’m not interested in going to multiple stores right now like I used to.  So, I’ve stuck to the store near me, which has fewer options.  If I can’t have what I usually eat, I find I’m eating what I shouldn’t.

What’s the final outcome?  I’m feeling a tad pudgy.  Thank goodness I already lived in stretchy workout pants.

During this ruleless time, my sleep has suffered.  Probably from more unfortunate diet choices, I am sure.  Usually, I wake up every morning around 3 or 4 and spend the next couple of hours tossing and turning.

When I am in this lighter sleep, I have the “crazy” dreams.  The ones that when I open my eyes, I blurt, “Well, that was weird.”

About a week ago, I was in a strange land in my dream.  More than one person grabbed my pudgy belly in the course of our conversation and squeezed it quickly three times.  When Declan was younger, he used to pinch the skin at my elbow that gathered when my arm was straight.  It was sensory pleasing to him.  Was my belly sensory pleasing to these people in my dream?  Maybe it was in their culture?

My attention is on the pudge.  It’s haunting me in my dreams.

I’m sure this is happening to others as well.  I can almost imagine when we see one another again for the first time how surprised we might be by the change in some of our body compositions.

So, I’m creating a new motto.  My anthem for the quarantine:

Don’t judgey the pudgy!

  1. No Judgey is right!! My entire food intake the other day was a large order of fries from McDonald’s, 2 “Grandma’s” oatmeal raisin cookies, 1 KitKat (whole pack) and 1 Reese’s (both cups), and many cups of coffee. I may have had 16oz of water…maybe.
    Don’t Care!! We’re surviving, that’s what matters😉🤣🤣💌

    1. That’s how I feel too! These are different circumstances and we are doing our best. We’re getting through this day by day (and by chip by chip 🙂 )

  2. I ate 2 Oreos between starting and ending your post. 🙂 Lots of snacking going on here too. Enjoy this time to indulge in crap and not feel too guilty about it. Hopefully we’ll be back to regular business soon!

    1. Ha! The Oreo’s made me laugh out loud 🙂 You’re right – let’s just get through this and then back on track!

  3. I had fish and chips for dinner last night from a resturant in the town near us. Delicious. I have other things on my mind and to be honest if they came with a side order of cheesies I would have eaten them all.

  4. I am still working out 3 – 4 hours a day, and have my flexible cast on for it. However, Easter European chocolate has been my friend, and because hubby is eating a lot of No sugar added ice cream, I bought my first tub in 32 years. I am going to reblog this as I believe we are all in the same boat. 🤣🤣🤣

    1. I’m still working out but enjoying a little too much of the other stuff too! Glad you can relate 🙂

    1. I hate that I don’t. I’ve tried all different ways to get one and I just can’t. Bothers me!

  5. Someone in my house makes dessert every night. Two of the last three weekends we bought a DQ cake, just because. I’m not a big desserter at night but during the lock down I’ve been right in there with everyone else snarfing down the cookies, cakes, brownies, fudge, etc. I wouldn’t say I’m getting pudgier, but I’m really squandering a period of hard and frequent workouts. I should be starting to look fit right now, but I’m not.

    1. Snarfing sounds about right. Same – I’m guessing that is why my runs aren’t going as well as I would like. I need to lay off the snacks. They are all around and I just pick. Not good!

  6. I understand just what you mean this lockdown has somehow become like a Holiday where we indulge more because it’s there! In usual circumstances straight after a holiday we resume our usual ways, this is an extended holiday just like my waistline 🤦‍♀️

    1. Exactly! Summer break, Christmas break I will bend the food rules and have fun. That is how this whole thing started and now my waistline is expanding with it’s duration, you’re right!

  7. You’re definitely not alone, Robyn! Whether it’s a kind of holiday mentality, or some kind of comfort in such bizarre and unsettling times, or even just to help us cope while our kids are climbing the walls around us, there’s a reason we’re all indulging in different eating habits. And I can understand them all. So no judging from me! 🙂

    1. Thank you, Alli! Definitely a unique time and we’re working our way through. Once this is over I am sure I will be back on track with everything. But in the meantime it’s whatever it takes, you’re right!

  8. I know what you mean, Robyn… I almost never eat pasta but since I’ve been stuck at home, I eat it every day. It’s comforting…

    1. I haven’t touched pasta in years. Last night was ravioli and gnocchi for dinner. I ate a turkey burger – but I had to try the pasta to make sure it was ready. Then I didn’t feel right throwing out the leftovers, so you know, I ate them too….

  9. I’m get the same reaction as you with soy, oats, dairy, gluten and beans. But currently that’s all the shop has in so I end up just eating the same as son. I weighed myself and I had put 4lbs on. Dreams are mad. I’m so with you on this. While respecting social distancing, I am embrace the pudge but can’t wait to start eating well again. x

    1. I agree – I can’t wait to get back on track! Beans are a trigger for me as well. It was when I was a vegetarian I was gaining all this weight, or at least feeling like a bloated mess that I started to reevaluate my diet. Beans were in there as well, you are right! I’m not going anywhere near a scale right now. I figure I’ll keep exercising, start a closer diet evaluation and do the best I can considering. Hoping this all ends sooner than later!

  10. Wow. Don’t know how you deal with all of the special food needs at your house even when life is relatively smooth. My current food of choice is Dove chocolate which, in order to avoid going into public I now buy in 43 oz bags instead of the normal 8 oz bags. I’m on the second gargantuan bag since lockdown!

    1. There is definitely a lot of cooking come dinner time. But thankfully I have been able to keep the younger two on the same dinner while my husband and Bobby have the other. Depending on my mood, I either eat what the boys are eating or cook myself something healthy. Buying in bulk is the way to go! I have a two pound container of rainbow sprinkles hopefully being delivered today – the kids love them in their waffles and the stores are sold out. It will be interesting to see if we actually make it through two pounds of sprinkles before the quarantine is over!
