Declan and the Cat

Font Size

In the two months I have owned a cat, I have discovered there is nothing more terrifying than trying to put a unagreeable cat into a cat carrier.

I have also learned that cats are particular and if you do not meet their demands, they can be a little testy.

This human has learned her cat’s wishes.  I know if I do not meet the cat’s requirements, I will pay the price.

Having had to pay the price a few times, with a few hisses and purposeful litter box missing (I mean, she went right next to it – c’mon!  Message received!) I stand a little on guard with the cat.

And have found there is nothing more unnerving than waking up in the middle of the night to have the cat looking at you.

At first, I would wake and sense something odd.  I would open my eyes to see the cat on my chest looking at me.

Just looking at me.

So, I rolled over.  An hour or so later I woke to see the cat lying on a pillow next to me.

Just looking at me.

This wasn’t a one-time occurrence.  For the past two months I wake in the middle of the night to see two little green eyes SOMEWHERE near my head.

Just looking at me.

The cat only comes out at night.  Turns out she is deathly afraid of our dogs.  I guess time on the road will do that to a cat.

So, at night when we cage the dogs the cat comes out.

Just to look at me.

At least that is what it feels like.  Maybe she does something else while I slumber.  I’d like to think so because the alternative is super creepy.  Just being stared at all night.

When, by chance, the cat has an encounter with one of our dogs we see how upset she is.  And begin to understand why she is such a recluse during the day.

As a talking friend to our Google Home and all our pets, Declan likes to sit next to the bed the cat is hiding under during the day to talk with her and ask about her day.  He will sit next to the closet she is hiding in to inquire if she liked her food.   He is a very thoughtful friend.

So, it should be no surprise that at the school’s book fair this week Declan took his money to buy this book:

Want to know why?

So he could read it to the cat when she was in hiding.  Declan thought the cat would like it.

How sweet is that?

So now I can listen to Declan sit next to a bed and read about the different kinds of cats to our cat hiding under the bed.  He even turns the book to try to show her pictures of the cats.

We even learned about our cat.  Turns out she isn’t as evil as I had concerned over.

Our cat must have been happy to hear that as she patiently listens to Declan’s reading to her.

Until nighttime.  When she can resume her perch near me.

Just to stare at me.

  1. This post made me smile. I used to have a cat that would come and sit on my chest in the night. He usually wanted to go outside, if I ignored him he would propel himself around the base of my bed on his back. He knew that would really get me cross and that was his quickest way of being let outside. Cat usually like to be all night and then sleep all day. I love cats they have a mind of their own. Bless Declan spending time talking to the cat, I hope that they end up good friends 😊

    1. Thank you, Elaine! This is our first experience with a cat so I am really learning about cats for the first time. This is good to know! 🙂

      1. They are natural hunters and depending where you live it can be safe for them outdoors. I loved my cat 🐈 he was a ginger cat called Percy, he was a rescue cat and very strong minded 😉

  2. It wouldn’t let me post a “like”, so I’ll just say, “Good morning”, Robyn.

My cat would stare at me whenever my family would go out of town. And, that’s not the worst she would do…

    1. I noticed that! I wonder why people can’t hit the like button on this one? Huh.
Oh no! That’s scary to think about, but funny 🙂

    1. Exactly! What is this cat planning?!?! I am sure there is something else planned besides “I’m just going to freak her out a bit….” 🙂

  3. Lovely post, Robyn, and very heart-warming. That’s so sweet of Declan to buy the cat a book. I’m a seasoned cat owner who’s had an endless string of felines throughout my life. We used to take in rescue cats and at one point we had 11, and every one had it’s own special character! So I know all their foibles and funny ways. Really, they’re amazing, so enjoy having one of these furry people in your home, and I’m sure it’ll give Declan no end of amusement. It’s a lovely story, and thanks for sharing. 🙂

    1. It’s our first cat, things are going okay. I feel kind of bad for her as she wants to be around me but the dogs – one especially – follow me everywhere. I think if we didn’t have dogs she would absolutely love it here. But I think she likes it here and Declan definitely thoroughly enjoys her – so that is good! We are getting there!

      1. That’s great news about Declan, and I’m sure she’s happy with you. She’s clearly taken a shine to you, which is an honour as far as cats go! If she’s not used to living with dogs it will take time but hopefully she’ll adjust. It might help if you, as her preferred human, held her for a few minutes here and there while the dogs are around, then if she gets reassurance from you it should help her settle down around them eventually. Honestly, cats are a wonderful addition to any household, and if you need any advice from a seasoned cat-owner, please feel free to ask. Have a great weekend with all your animals – and family! 🙂

    1. The kitty is probably waiting for me to calm down while I am waiting for her to find someone else to watch at night. I just remember her testy moments and keep thinking she is going to attack but I guess she isn’t. We’re getting there!

  4. Funny, but creepy!

I spent the night at my husband’s aunt’s house a few years ago, and woke to find her cat under the covers with me. 😀 It was one of those hairless ones.

    1. Oh my gosh – that would freak me out! I guess it was cold? Oh man, that’s a story for sure! 🙂

  5. Very sweet and funny post. I’m happy that your son is getting along with the cat. I love cats. My cat makes me laugh when she ‘stares’ at me with that big round eyes of hers. Have you ever tried to slowly blink your eyes when your cat is staring at you? It’s a friendly way of letting your cat knows you love her.
