Square One Art

Every year in art class, the kids create a specific special piece of artwork.

This piece is sent into Square One Art for parents to peruse and purchase different household items with their child’s special artwork on it. The purchases are a fundraiser for the school, so we have always participated.

Since I like to put pictures on my refrigerator of the kids and their special memories, I always get the magnets. The Square One magnets I have on the fridge now look something like this:

Colorful owl – Bobby
Happy giraffe in nature – Catelyn
Hearts – Bobby
Hearts and love – Catelyn

Today was art class. THE class that the students were going to begin working on their Square One Art project. I have sat with Declan for all of his classes – was this really one I needed to sit through too? The older kids had fallen into their own academic traps: failure to complete asynchronous work, or completed it poorly, and needed some help. Couldn’t I skip art to work with one of them for the forty-five minutes I would otherwise be sitting and watching Declan draw?

I signed Declan on to his art class zoom. I gathered the items he would need to complete what was requested of him. Then I left to sit in the other room to help Catelyn learn and complete an assignment about mercantilism.

I had an ear in Declan’s room. I peeked to see him sitting and listening to the teacher and the videos she provided. I saw the border she wanted each student to put on their piece of artwork.

But it wasn’t until Declan had waved goodbye when class was over, jumped off of Zoom, and ran outside to play that I saw what he created.

It took me a second to laugh. I call it “Online learning during COVID-19.” I think it is perfect:

Square One Art will have another purchase from this house on the way. I will be buying this piece of artwork in magnets, for sure. Declan’s art fits my online learning mood, and I think of everyone else in this house, to a T. 😊

  1. Aw, I love it! We’ve done Square One many times! I have more pillow cases with art on them than I can count πŸ˜‚ And magnets and a wooden treasure box! Apparently she has no budget when ordering her artwork!

    1. I just realized this past year that you can go back to previous years on their website and review the artwork and order more products. That, my friend, is the danger zone! Haha! πŸ™‚

  2. I think I see a butterfly… 🀣 Kidding aside, that picture is perfect. Congrats on surviving your first month almost. You are such a trooper for your kids!!!

  3. That’s an ant swimming in wash-away tide. This is much more fun, you can come up with many interpretations. This is likely to suit every one of my moods! πŸ˜€ Go, Declan!

  4. That’s fantastic, Robyn! I could do with a copy too, as it sums up everyone in our house’s feelings towarrds this year in general! Well done, Declan, you’ve expressed how everyone feels about 2020 and online learning in one superb piece of art! πŸ™‚

  5. It’s perfect. And to my mind a valid interpretation of what the teacher had shown as the desired pattern. That drawing is exactly how I feel sometimes. Bravo Declan!

      1. And as an aside, our neighbour sent me a message the other day and signed it “Chaos Central”. Her husband is a farmer and he got injured this summer but is still working getting in their harvest and they also have three boys! She would put Declan’s drawing up on her fridge too!

  6. I was eating a salad as I read this. Take a bite, look at a picture, take a bite look at a picture, etc. Salad finished as I hit Declan’s art. Gotta love it. It definitely needs to be on a magnet. Maybe you can get him to add the year.

    1. He was only supposed to do the edge, so I think more is coming. I also think I will leave him unsupervised the next art class to see what happens next. I think it will be good! πŸ™‚
