“Do you have any questions?” the secretary asked.
“Um, yes. I would like to talk about clouds right now.” Declan answered.
The secretary took a step back and looked surprised. A conversation about clouds would really be off topic. “Clouds?”
“Yes. There are four different types of clouds.”
“Oh yeah, I think I remember learning about clouds when I was in school. I forget the kinds though. Do you know the kinds of clouds?”
“Yes,” Declan lifted his hand and with each finger he labeled a cloud, “They are cirrus, nimbus, stratus and cumulus.”
“That’s right!” The secretary nodded in wide eyed approval, “Thanks for reminding me!” the secretary then turned to me. “Mom, do you have any questions?”
“No, thank you. Let’s go, Declan.” I smiled and we left.

“We also have a science group that does a lot of different activities,” the camp counselor said and pointed to the area to our left. “Over here this past week we had a game involving all of the different planets.
“I like planets,” Declan replied as he swayed back and forth, “I like dwarf planets too.”
“Dwarf planets?”
“Yes.”
“How many dwarf planets are there?”
“Five.”
“Do you know their names.”
“Yes, they are Ceres, Pluto, Haumea, Makemake and Eris. And then there is Orcus. But it is not technically an official dwarf planet yet. Which, by the way, reminds me I like to talk about Orcas, also known as Killer Whales, too.”
The counselor looked at Declan and shook his head in wonder, “Where were you through all my science classes when I was in school.”
Declan continued to sway and looked to the sky in confusion, probably wondering how to answer the question.
“My husband and I were so shocked when he started telling us these facts. Now if we want to know something, we just ask Declan. He seems to know.”
The counselor nodded his head, “I would too!”

“Today, on his way back from OT we stopped and talked with the principal. Declan told her all the 45 presidents in order. She was so surprised he knew them all!”
Declan’s teacher turned from me, bent down and faced Declan.
“Declan, you have such a unique and special mind. I can’t do that. I can’t remember the Presidents. My mind isn’t built like that. We are all so different. Your brain is so special. You are so special. Do you understand?”
Declan looked to the ground and nodded. “Okay,” he replied.
Declan’s teacher gave him a high five and stood. “Everyday he teaches me something new. I’ve learned so much from him this year.”
I smiled and nodded, “Me too.”

Like Declan’s teacher said, I learn something new from Declan every day. Today’s subject? Snakes. Specifically, the venom in the Black Mamba and the Inland Taipan (although I was told not to worry – I probably would never see the Inland Taipan – It’s shy. What Declan doesn’t realize, when it comes to snakes – I’m shyer).
But it was the other thing Declan’s teacher said that really stood out for me. Every time I hear Declan spout a new fact, a new piece of information or the answer to a question I never thought to ask, I hear her in my head.
“Declan, you have such a unique, special mind.”
I can’t remember the details he does either. My brain wasn’t built like that.
Declan’s brain was built like that. Which makes not only his brain, but himself, a very special, unique person!
A very special unique little boy indeed ❤️
Thank you so much, Elaine! 🙂
A creative, thoughtful brain – he’s one of a kind, highly intelligent & curious which is an incredible combination 😊xx
Thank you so much! 🙂 xx
He left out cumulonimbus… kids, eh?
So, he’s adding science to his brain. That’s beautiful!
Apparently that is combining two cloud categories – cumulus and nimbus. There are all sorts of combinations (which I just found out).
He is! He sucks it up like a sponge! Stuff I would need flash cards to remember for five minutes he just takes to now – it’s crazy! And fun at the same time 🙂
That’s really great that he can hold all those facts! Who needs Google, you can just “Declan”😂
I’ll bet he can’t remember where his shoes are though😉
💌💌
Hahahaa! Exactly!! If he WANTS to learn about something, he knows it through and through. Anything else is left by the wayside – like those shoes 🙂
What a lovely story, Robyn. And you must have been so proud when he teacher said what a unique and special mind Declan has. And she’s right – he has. It’s moments like that, when other people show real positive appreciation of our special kids that make all the other hassles and challenges worthwhile. And you’ll remember that for ever. 🙂
Thank you so much, Alli! It was so nice to hear those words from the teacher. For me and for him to hear. I agree – there are so many ups and downs and to have that positive out there was so nice to recognize. You are right, I will remember that forever 🙂
It’s important to treasure the good bits. And that goes for everything in life. Well done, both of you. 🙂
He is a gorgeous soul and you do such a wonderful job of preventing the systems from clipping his wings. What what do you think is his favourite thing he likes to learn about.
Thank you so much! I am always so surprised to hear the topic of conversation for the day,. He tells me a lot of facts – he seems to focus on a new science topic each week right now. But for that week it is all about the subject of choice. And he retains everything that he is learning (the other side is that he does not learn or retain the information someone tries to teach him that he doesn’t care about). Declan’s interests right now are all so new and interesting to me!
Love this! What a special gift to have a such a special mind!!! He is also fortunate to have the two parents who are raising him! He was blessed beyond measure in so many ways!!!
Thank you so much, Jeff!!!
Ah this is beautiful. Love it! Amazing & impressive because I don’t think I myself can name all 45 presidents in order.
Go Declan! Such brilliant soul.
Thank you so much! 🙂
It’s amazing how their little minds work!
By the way, did he maybe learn about the planets from “The Kids’ Picture Show”? 😁
It’s my son’s favourite YouTube thing right now!
I agree! It is so fascinating 🙂 I have watched SO many videos with Declan from Mystery Doug, but I think the planets come from Mr. Demaio – both are so fun for him ( and me) to watch! It is amazing what the kids find!
I just love that you share these stories. I used to work with people with autism and other special needs. One of my favorite parts of the job was discovering their uniqueness and special talents or qualities. There is so much more to a person than what you may glean from first impressions!! ❤️❤️❤️
Thank you so much!
Love his response.
You are as incredible as your child..
Your support helps children like Declan, actually have a life.. take care. 😉🙏👍
That is so kind – thank you so much! 🙂
