Let the countdown continue – I am finally ready!

I had taken my early morning gym class as usual and was out on the trails for my early morning run when the text came through:

A drive home later, and I could make sense of Declan’s pain.

“I like to make those videos on Tik Tok about which video game characters can come to my birthday, and I am SAD because they are trying to ban Tik Tok!”

OOOOOOOOOHHHHHHhhhhh.  Okay.

In short, someone has a birthday coming up.  Declan is beyond excited about his big day.

EVERY MORNING Declan starts the day with a countdown.  “Today is July 8th.  Tomorrow is July 9th.  Then it is July 10th.  Then July 11th.  And then it will be July 12th.  And then, and then, and then…and then guess what day it is?!?  MY BIRTHDAY!”

So that you know, he has been doing this since July 1st.  I’ve realized July is a long month.

Before he started the countdown, he started on his birthday present.  This year, there was only one thing on his mind.

Nintendo Switch.

“If it is pink, blue, gray, or yellow, that is the Switch Lite.  I do NOT want a Switch Lite.  I want a Nintendo Switch.  They are gray or black with different colored handles, like red or blue.”

We went to look at them.  The differences pointed out to meticulous detail.  I assured Declan I understood what he wanted, and I told him:

“There is no way I can mess up.  They are different prices.  I know to get the more expensive one.  If I pay $200, then I got the wrong one.  I am paying $300.  I understand.”

Do we usually ever buy a child a $300 birthday present?  No!  That is a lot of money!  But the request for this console came in January, and we shook our heads.

“A gift that big is either a Christmas or Birthday gift.”

And here we are.  Having that much time to prepare, we had that much time to budget.

Or, so we thought.

A few weeks ago, we were going through the differences in the Switches while looking at them in the display case.  One week ago, at our local store, I noticed something dreadful.  The locked Switch display box was…*gasp* empty!

The next day, I went online to make the big purchase.  But, wait a second – why were they all $500 – USED?

There were a lot of deep breaths.  I did an internet search for their availability in our area.  Twenty minutes later, I was at a different store making a desperate call:

“Bob?  They are sold out here, too!  Something must be up.  Is the Switch on its way out?”

“I don’t know.  But I do know we need to find one and fast.”

When I pulled into the driveway after my failed purchase attempt, I saw that Bob was unable to cap his anxiety and spilled the beans to big D.

(Side note: Declan does voice to text.  Are there that many people that have written they were “souled out” that autocorrect thinks THAT is what someone is trying to say?)

An hour of internet scrounging and I found one about an hour and a half away.  As the store prepared our purchase for curbside pickup, we breathed a sigh of relief.

Until a half an hour later when another gut-wrenching email was received.

“What do you think it means?” Bob asked as we sat sagged, staring at a computer screen.

I squinted my eyes at him, looked back to the screen, and pointed.

“I think it means they don’t actually have one.  We have to keep looking.”

And so, we did until we landed on eBay and found the most reasonable, priced at $410.

Ouch.

It appears to this clueless girl that SOMEONE knew SOMETHING and purchased them all and then tried to capitalize.  I wasn’t sure if I could give positive feedback to the seller knowing he was the SOMEONE who knew SOMETHING as he had seven more to sell.

When the package finally arrived, my feelings towards the seller changed ever so slightly.

Declan is calmer, knowing we were able to acquire a Switch from eBay.  But unlike his daily checks of my Amazon account, he does not know how to navigate my eBay account.  I am frequently encouraged to check my eBay account to see where the package is.

But I know where the package is.  It is safely stored at the top of our closet.  When the package arrived, Declan circled it, feeling something was off with it, but couldn’t figure out what.

Mr. eBay was kind enough to ship Declan’s present in an Amazon box, allowing for Declan’s big present to stay hidden from his very watchful eye.

Tomorrow, the July countdown will continue.  The excitement will continue to build.  And even though it came at a much higher cost, I finally have THE birthday present safely hidden away, waiting for the big day.

Whew!

  1. Oh, Robyn, I so feel for you – I know exactly how awful and stressful it is if you can’t get just the right thing! It’s enough to cause sleepless nights. But I’m so glad it all worked out for you in the end and you can relax now and enjoy Declan’s delight on the day. I hope he has a really fab birthday. 🙂

    1. That was a close call. I couldn’t believe it! Declan is pretty “IN” to Nintendo, and either he doesn’t know or I just wasn’t asking the “right” question but he had no idea this was going to happen either. Thankfully, we got just what he wanted. That was close! Thanks, Alli! 🙂

      1. Nathan is very into Nintendo too, so we’ve had similar things with DS games. He hasn’t discovered Switch yet though, and long may it last… 😀 I am so relieved for you though. You can relax now! 🙂

        1. I hear ya! Whatever the next thing may be, I hope Declan never figures it out 🙂 Thanks, Alli! 🙂

    1. I agree. Someone knows something and totally took the systems from us regular folk. It really stinks!

  2. Such a close call!! After the Easter delay I don’t think poor D could handle not getting his Switch! My anxiety went up just reading it. I know that feeling of “I don’t care how much it costs, I HAVE to have this thing”.

Luckily Ben has pretty inexpensive wants. The pink cookies are only $5 a package😉

    1. Oh my goodness, I know! The Switch HAD to be here. It was my fault for not buying it sooner, I just wanted to wait because I had the money all figured out and the beginning of July was the best time for us to put the money out. Which was too late! Aggghhh! Thankfully it all worked out. Thank goodness!

  3. You have the patience and determination of a saint. 😂 Oh, I’m so happy it worked out and you found it. And very smart to have it arranged to be shipped in an Amazon package cuz nothing seems to pass by eagle eyed Declan!

He is a lucky boy to have such a determined and persistent mom.

Happy birthday to your wonderful boy and I hope the celebration is a fantastic one.

PS. I didn’t realize Nintendo Switches were the new toilet papers. Should’ve capitalized on this earlier!

    1. Ahh! I can breathe again! It is here! Thank goodness!
I didn’t arrange for that. If I had thought about it beforehand I may have asked, but Mr. eBay just grabbed the closest thing to him apparently and the Amazon box totally worked out in my favor! Yay! Declan keeps opening the closet with a suspicious eye, but my lips are sealed (along with the box 😉 ).
      Thank you!!
I know! Bob tried the, “Well, maybe they will get new ones in before his birthday?” And when I saw the prices online, I realized we were way behind the game. Darnit! 🙂

      1. Enjoy the Switch! It is family friendly so maybe you and Bob will get into it too. 😊 have a great birthday party and look forward to hearing how it goes.

  4. I remember going through something like this abut a doll that our daughter wanted . It was sold out everywhere .My husband finally found one somewhere. Well I hope the Birthday will be a big success.

  5. I read your posts and feel as though we are living the same life — Nats’ b-day is also in July – at the END of July…so we have many more days to our countdown (and she reminds us every day and has been planning since CHRISTMAS). And, you remind me that what I ordered (at least a week ago) isn’t here yet…. off to my email I go to check on it! 🙂

    1. Oh my gosh, yes! You know my pain! Well, I guess it is not pain, per see. In a little bit, I am going to hear the countdown and then the wonder as to where his birthday package is. I have a couple more weeks to go. I’ll be thinking of you and sending you good “we can get through this birthday season” vibes! 🙂

  6. We went through something similar when Eli got his PS4. It was on sale for a month and it was all he could talk about. When we finally agreed to buy it they had all been snapped up by the ebay crowd and were selling for $100 more. Clearly I’m not savvy enough to compete in today’s world. The PS5 is coming out soon. Can’t wait.

    1. Ugh. So frustrating! I am clearly not that savvy either. We’ve looked everywhere and still can’t see what the future of the Switch is and why they are all gone. Those eBayers know something!

  7. I so know that feeling of panic. Son had his birthday in a March just when the product lines from China had dried up. All you keep thinking is why didn’t I buy straight away. So pleased you got one but sorry it was so expensive. Top hunting to get one. If it’s any consolation it’s the same here and they are not that far off from the price you paid if you find one.

    1. That was exactly what I was thinking. “I’ve known he has wanted this thing for months. Why didn’t I just buy it then!?!” Thanks! I am so happy I have it here, tucked away, ready for the big day. Yesterday he found my hiding spot and circled it like a vulture, encouraging me to “just check out what was inside.” I think I am going to have to find a new hiding spot. 🙂

    1. Oh my gosh, I have even been talked to about how he is going to open it. “You better wrap it. You know I hate bags.” When he was younger, he told me a bagged gift was a “broken” gift. He cracks me up :-).
